Project Unearthed

To preserve and conserve prehistoric evidence to aid research and education for future generations about what lies beneath our feet.

The brain child of Unearthed discovery Centre CIC is Fossils Galore Museum & Educational Activity Centre based in March, Cambridgeshire it has been successfully running for the past 15 years bringing hands-on learning about prehistoric life and minerals to everyone regardless of age, ability or background.  We have now outgrown our space and are looking to move to the next level, to do this we have created a Community Interest Company, Unearthed Discovery Centre CIC, aiming to keep education and the community at the heart of everything we do.

The Owner being someone who has grown up with the challenges of dyslexia he has ensured the team will develop  this new project to make learning accessible to all ages and abilities.

Our biggest crowd draw, and scientifically important discovery, is Indie the Iguanodon, a dinosaur skeleton we discovered back in 2017 in Surrey. We have been working on this skeleton since its discovery in one of the first fish bowl laboratories in Europe, but now we are in need of more space as it is estimate we still have another 5-8 years worth of work to expose all the bones as well as a back log of other important specimens in need preparation, all of which will be done in full view of the public. With a larger preparation laboratory we will also be able to train up more technicians to work on an ever expanding collection of specimens discovered in the felid.

To achieve the vision of opening a National Centre of Prehistory we are raising funds to purchase a suitable venture and transform it into a World class facility.

Our patron is zoologist and TV star Nigel Marven who presented the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs and ITVs Prehistoric Park, He is in full support of this project and he is excited to be part of the official opening.

Facilities to be available at this new Centre are:

· Museum—regularly changing displays of local and world wide fossil and mineral specimens

· Prehistoric educational Children’s Activities—Hands on learning experience accessible for all ages and abilities

· Fish Bowl preparation Laboratory—To preserve and conserve prehistoric evidence to aid research and education of what lies beneath our feet, on full view to the public.

· Living fossil walk– a walk through a selection of living fossil from plants to animals.

· Dinosaur Walk—Walk around the most up to date Dinosaur sculptures with emphasis on Dinosaurs found in the UK .

· Events—dedicated events throughout the year based on prehistoric subjects.

· Excavation Call out Team– A hub for our exaction team to be on 24/7 call out to any reported prehistoric discoveries.

· Education—A safe environment for Schools and organisations to come and learn all about what lies beneath our feet.

We thank everyone for any donation not matter how big or small.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire visited us for discussions on this project and has given it their full support. We are also working closely with and supported by the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Combined Authority.

Would you like Unearthed Discovery Centre to come to Huntingdonshire?

This is what we would like to bring to the area, A Palaeontological research centre on local and worldwide discoveries can be preserved and conserved. This new type of museum and Research centre will offer much more than anything similar in the UK/Europe. We envisage our research centre/educational hub to have a state of the art preparation laboratory with the facility for researchers to make use of all equipment to aid in the most up to date study of Palaeontology as well as Mineralogy. We also will create an Earths Sciences library to aid with study and better understanding of all earth sciences. With this a purpose built classroom/s to aid in the education of relevant topics. With any land we acquire we would be looking to expand on the educational element by introducing Palaeontology and earth science subject safe learning areas to aid in maximising in the educational purpose of the site. The local community is at the heart of our project and would like to work closely with the local community offering space for community events and help local schools and nurseries with maximising the educational impact.
